Small provincial town founded on a high hill of the
river Esman' around a thousand years ago. In the beginning
of the 18th century it became the Hetman's capital
of the Left-bank Ukraine. There is an old Spaso-Preobrazhens'ka
Church (Church of the Savior's Transfiguration) in
Ukrainian baroque style. The music of the famous composers
Bortnians'kyi, Vedel, Berezovs'kyi who were pupils
of Glukhiv music school reached our days. In the second
part of the 19th century the economy of Glukhiv sky-rocketed.
Pedagogical Institute and Anastasyiivs'ka Church (St.
Anastasia's Church) were built by charity of sugar
plant owner Mykola Tereshchenko and his wife.
